Story |

I have a great love for cats, and in the midst of working on a series of my more spiritual focused artworks, I wanted to get some new ideas together for my fantasy landscapes. I had cats on the mind recently, and I was considering combining ancient ruins in the landscapes and considered the idea of a giant stone cat temple.
As I progressed through the painting, it needed the life of the highlights in the eyes to bring forth a strong sense of life to compliment the dramatic sky.

I have spent a full month of working and reworking this painting, making changes and adjustments to capture the soft light, the atmosphere, to feel the softness of the grassy hills gently moving to a warm summer breeze, the sparkle and beauty of the slow flowing tranquil and serene river, with the added ambiance  of the waterfall mist.

Golden light is something that has touched something deep within me since I can recall as a child, words are limited to express the majesty of a warm afternoon life, contrasted with the adjacent dark shadows. Warm soft light is an artwork in itself, poetic and profound, and I knew this is what this artwork needed, something deep and rich to touch something within the soul, as your eyes look toward the distance horizon catching subtle yet poignant highlights in the far off mountains, gently shadowed by the monumental ethereal clouds formations, powerful sun rays creating golden lining and dramatic displays of light with the complexity of the cloud formations.

I always pour my heart into my artworks, and I hope you will feel that in this particular artwork. |

Technical |

This painting was initially toned before painting with a wash of yellow ochre, sketched out in burnt sienna then blocked in monotone with burnt umber and water to get the initial values. The yellow ochre gives warmth to the painting and the block in of pure values helps to achieve depth. Initially I used glazes over the monotone underpainting, although some of the glazes were partially painted over as I made decisions to take the painting in the direction that felt right, leading to a much more dramatic landscape overall, especially with the depth of the cloud formations. |
